Terrarium is a 21-minute immersive installation that explores positive and viable pathways to heal socio-ecological environments. It combines film, performing arts, sound and spatial design.
Plurality through Archetypes
Terrarium unfolds through seven tightly woven perspectives projected across a modular, site-responsive multi-screen environment. Each character acts as a seedling, embodying urgent socio-ecological challenges and sparking alternative ways of seeing and responding to the world. These intertwined visions propose that meaningful solutions emerge through symbiosis—between human and non-human communities and with the socio-ecological environments we share.
The immersive approach is essential to creating emotional engagement and long-lasting impact. A lounge-like space design helps prime the audience for a positive contemplative experience. The enveloping sound design comprises original music and curation of intervened natural sounds, adding non-human voices to the installation. Instead of sitting through the experience, audiences inhabit a space that offers a realistic sense of purpose rather than a narrow doomsday depiction of the future.
“I've realized that the most impactful elements of my art were the relational aspect (of the process and with the audience) and the powerful narratives developed through empathic listening. Terrarium aims to provoke the necessary cultural shifts for socio-ecological regeneration through visual storytelling. The project achieves these shifts by substituting old narratives with positive representations of the future, a radical act of imagination, hope and creation.”
– Damian Siqueiros, Director of Terrarium
Process as Impact
In Terrarium, the creative process is as vital as the final artwork. To support this, we’ve built a thriving environment that is multicultural, gender-balanced, and eco-responsible. I have assembled a core team of collaborators who embody these principles.
As Terra Sapiens Studio’s first major project, Terrarium is not only about producing compelling images and experiences – it is also about cultivating a way of working. The team itself became a microcosm for the values needed to heal socio-ecological systems. Our framework centred on compassion, community building, empathy, gender, economic and cultural equity, the integration of diverse worldviews, and circularity.
