Baraye: The Right to Joy

Terra Sapiens Studio x Québec Dance

Celebrating dance as a symbol of life

Dance is not a luxury. It is a language, a right, and — for many around the world — an act of resistance.

Baraye: The Right to Joy was commissioned by Le Regroupement québécois de la danse (RQD) as Québec's official contribution to International Dance Day 2023. Launched on April 28, the work is both a celebration and a declaration: that freedom of expression — through the body, through movement, through joy — is not something to be taken for granted.

At a moment when artists in Iran and across the world were risking everything to dance, to sing, and to be seen, the film asks Québec's dance community to turn outward — to share their passion not just as artistic practice, but as an act of solidarity with those for whom that freedom is still a fight.

Baraye is a reminder that culture is never neutral. And that joy, when it is claimed collectively and offered freely, becomes one of the most powerful forms of resistance there is.
